Little-Known Works of a Renowned French Pianist.

The pianist John Owings, winner of first prize in the Casadesus Competition in 1976, its inaugural year, and the violinist Fritz Gearhart gave a supple and imaginative account of a sweetly modal "Hommage à Chausson." On his own, Mr. Owings excitingly dispatched the fingertwisting double-note passages in Casadesus's relentless 1946 Toccata, which mixes syncopated rhythms borrowed from jazz with grim modal harmonies.
